The children’s literary festival will take place 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2017, outdoors on the grounds at Mabel Murple’s Dreamery and Book Shoppe, on Allen Road in River John, NS.

Featured authors are Marie-Louise Gay and Alan Syliboy, with author and television personality Starr Dobson as Mistress of Ceremonies. The program includes story-reading, music and activities.

Humour in writing is entertaining, but much more than that. It is also a powerful tool for fleshing out your characters and helping readers identify with them. Humour works for fiction and non-fiction, for prose, poetry, short stories and novels.

The workshop is interactive, participatory, and may get rowdy. Come prepared.

Jan L. Coates has written over twenty stories for children. She has twice been shortlisted in the Atlantic Writers’ Competition. Her novel A Hair in the Elephant’s Trunk was finalist for the 2011 Governor General Award. She lives in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Gary L. Blackwood started his writing career as a teen, and has since become a prolific author of novels for both young adults and middle-grade readers, in addition to penning plays and nonfiction.

In grade two, Melanie received a silver dollar for winning an essay contest and she has been fascinated with writing ever since. She now lives in a tiny green house with a bright orange door, with her husband, Jim. Melanie loves to write for children.

Melanie will be signing her new book “Goth Girl“.

Camelia Airheart

Camelia Airheart, the loveable Canada goose with the faulty GPS or Goose Positioning System is headed for Mabel Murple’s Book Shoppe and Dreamery on Saturday, August 26th. Hopefully her creators Odette Barr, Beth Weatherbee, and Colleen Landry will keep her on task and following the goose butt so that she will arrive safely in River John because they are looking forward to teaching everyone the Branta Bog ballad and Camelia’s take-off routine. They will also give an animated reading of Take Off to Tantramar and a chapter or two of Follow the Goose Butt, Camelia Airheart!
